Poem for Palm Sunday 2017

I do not preach on Palm/Passion Sunday since the Gospel Passion narratives are so long. These narratives are where the congregation give the crowds replies calling for Jesus to be crucified.

Palm Sunday 2017
I tell myself if I had been there
I would have cheered, when he
rode into town. to “Set us free”
risking all the authorities glare.
I tell myself if I had been there
I’d fully understood the meaning
behind the meal we were eating
And boldly meet fates we’d share.
I tell myself if I had been there
I’d perform all sorts of derring-do
as such a Saint will be called due
in company with Francis or Clare.
But I fear that I’d join another crowd,
yelling  to place Jesus into a shroud.
